Better Sleep, Better Health:

Why a Sleep Study Could Change Your Life

Do you snore, feel exhausted during the day, or struggle to stay asleep?

What Is a Sleep Study?

A sleep study is a painless, overnight test that records how your body functions while you sleep. During the study, sensors monitor a wide range of physiological data, including:

Brainwave activity (EEG) to assess your sleep stages and detect disruptions.

Breathing patterns through your nose, mouth, chest, and abdome.

Blood oxygen levels via a

pulse oximeter.

Heart rate and rhythm (EKG).

Eye movement (EOG) and muscle tone (EMG).

Snoring sounds and airflow.

Body position and Movements     .

This data gives our sleep specialists a complete picture of your sleep quality and any disorders that may be affecting it.

Why It Matters: 5 Reasons to Get a Sleep Study

1. Many people live with undiagnosed sleep disorders. In the U.S. alone, it’s estimated that 50 to 70 million adults suffer from a sleep disorder, and up to 80–90% of people with sleep apnea remain undiagnosed. This means tens of  of Americans are living with a serious, treatable condition without even knowing it. A sleep study can detect serious but silent conditions like:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Central Sleep Apnea

Insomnia

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD)

Narcolepsy

2. Protect Your Long-Term Health Sleep issues are linked to a wide range of chronic health problems:

High blood pressure

Heart disease and stroke

Type 2 diabetes

Weight gain and obesity

Depression, anxiety and mood disorders

Memory issues and cognitive decline

Deeper more restful sleep,

Increased energy and alertness,

Improved focus and memory

Better mood and reduce stress

3. Improve Daily Functioning After proper diagnosis and treatment,

many patients report:

4. Stay Safe at Work and Behind the Wheel Sleep disorders are a major

cause of drowsy driving and workplace accidents. Untreated sleep apnea increases the risk of motor vehicle accidents up to five-fold.

A sleep study could help you prevent life-threatening errors.

5. Make Informed Decisions About Your Health Getting a sleep study gives you personalized, evidence-based data about your sleep. It arms you with the knowledge to pursue the best treatment options for long-term wellness.

Here’s how we do it differently:

✓ Comprehensive, Epoch-by-Epoch Review: Each 8-hour sleep study contains approximately 1,000 "epochs" (30-second segments) of data. At Stuart Sleep, we meticulously examine each epoch—not just the summary—to ensure nothing is missed. We analyze interactions between brain activity, oxygen levels, heart function, and more.

✓ One-on-One Attention: Your sleep study is conducted in a private, comfortable setting by a dedicated sleep specialist. We tailor the study to your individual health concerns—not a one-size-fits-all approach.

✓ Prompt Results and Clear Communication: No waiting weeks for results. We deliver fast, detailed feedback and personally review your results with you. Want to see your own data? We’ll walk you through it.

✓ Review of Prior Sleep Studies: Already had a study elsewhere? We offer second opinions. Our team can review your previous sleep study interpretation or reanalyze the full raw data for accuracy and completeness.

✓ Transparency and Patient Empowerment: We believe patients deserve to understand their health. At Stuart Sleep, we make sure you feel confident in your results and your next steps.

✓ Affordable and Flexible Payment: Options We understand that cost can be a barrier to getting the care you need. That’s why Stuart Sleep offers unique financing options to make both sleep studies and treatments accessible. Additionally, our pricing is substantially lower than what you will find at other sleep clinics- all while significantly enhancing quality

and the patient experience.

You’ll receive world-class care at a

fraction of the typical cost.

Frustrated with CPAP your not alone. 6 out of every 10 patients prescribed CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) either:

          Don’t use it consistently

          Stop using it altogether

Use it improperly due to mask                          leaks, discomfort, or settings

These may seem like small

annoyances, but they could be symptoms of a more

serious, yet treatable, sleep disorder. A sleep study

(also called a polysomnogram) is the first step toward uncovering

the root of the problem and improving your sleep, your health, and your life.

Home Sleep Tests (HSTs): What You Should Know

Home Sleep Tests (HSTs) are increasingly promoted within the sleep medicine community due to a growing shortage of board-certified sleep specialists. These tests can be administered quickly and interpreted more rapidly since they collect far less data than is captured through a comprehensive in-lab polysomnogram (PSG).

The benefit of HSTs is that they help screen many patients who might otherwise wait months for a study. However, HSTs come with serious limitations compared to a full overnight polysomnogram (PSG)- the only type of sleep study performed at Stuart Sleep.

HSTs typically record only a few key metrics:

+ Respiratory effort (via a single belt)

+ Blood oxygen levels (pulse oximeter)

+ Airflow (nasal pressure cannula and                                                                                                              thermistor)

What HSTs don’t record is more concerning:

     -     No EEG: HSTs can’t detect sleep stages, awakenings, seizures, narcolepsy, REM sleep behavior disorders, and other potentially serious sleep disorders

     -     No EKG: HSTs can’t monitor heart rate, rhythm, or dangerous cardiac events like atrial fibrillation

     -     No EMG: HSTs can’t detect muscle activity related to RLS, bruxism, or PLMD

     -     No body position or snoring: HSTs can’t correlate apneas with posture or snoring intensity

Additionally, with only one belt that can often become twisted or loose during the night, respiratory data captured by HSTs is often inaccurate or incomplete. In contrast, our in-lab studies use two belts for accurate chest and abdominal effort measurements, and your study is personally attended by a sleep specialist the entire night to troubleshoot issues in real-time.

Simply put, HSTs may appear to offer some convenience, but they fall short considerably in providing the depth of information necessary for a truly accurate diagnosis and a fully informed

treatment plan.
